The incident happened in Canada. On an icy cold night, snow was falling everywhere. A wealthy man saw an old, frail beggar in front of his house. The rich man went down and asked him, “Why are you outside in such cold? Where are your warm clothes?”
The old man replied, “I am poor and helpless; I have no warm clothes, but I have learned to cope.”
Surprised, the rich man said, “Wait here a moment — I’ll bring you some warm clothes.”
He went back into his house, and became so busy with things that he forgot about the old man. The next morning, when the events of the night came back to his mind, he rushed outside — but by then the old man was dead. He had frozen to death during the night.
Lesson: False promises wound a person’s heart and destroy their courage. So think carefully before you make a promise: can you really keep it?
