A female student asked her teacher, “Sir, what is true love?”
The teacher replied, “I will answer your question, but first you must do something. Go to the cornfield in front of our college and bring back the largest ear of corn. There is one condition: once you pass over any ears while looking for a larger one, you cannot take those you left behind.”
The student thought to herself, What kind of task is this? She smiled faintly, went to the cornfield, and began searching from the very first row. There was a large ear in that row, but she thought perhaps an even bigger one awaited her in the rows ahead.
After she had searched more than half the field, she realized that the ears she had passed were not as large as the one she had seen earlier. The biggest ear of the whole field lay behind her, and she was filled with endless regret. But there was nothing she could do now. So she gave up the search and returned to the teacher empty-handed.
Then the teacher said to her, “This is true love. You may have found the right person in your life, but if you abandon them hoping for someone better, a day will come when you realize you have lost the person most suited to you. No amount of regret will bring them back.”
